Editing Checklist
Thoughtful self-editing helps you strengthen your writing, catch issues early, and respect your readers’ time. Use this checklist to give your work a series of focused passes before you submit to your writing group or a wider audience.
First draft -> editing passes -> beta readers -> more editing passes!/professional editing -> arc readers -> published!!!
You don’t have to fix everything at once. Move step by step, and remember: every pass is a chance to make your story clearer, sharper, and more engaging.
First Pass – Big Picture
Focus on your overall story: purpose, stakes, structure, and flow. Make sure the main idea is clear, and the pacing makes sense. The beginning, middle, and ending should all serve a core message or narrative.
[Think: Does it make sense? Are parts slow? What is it missing?]
Second Pass – Scene & Chapter Level
Look at each scene or chapter on its own: does it have a clear purpose, conflict, and change? Check that transitions between sections are smooth and that each part earns its place in the larger work.
[Do you like the chapter because it serves an important purpose, or because you spent a lot of time writing it?]
Third Pass – Paragraph & Sentence Level
Zoom in on how ideas are expressed: paragraph order, topic sentences, and sentence variety. Aim for clear, readable prose that guides the reader smoothly from one idea to the next.
Fourth Pass – Line Editing & Word Choice
Refine your language: tighten sentences, cut repetition, and choose precise, vivid words. Check for consistency in tone and voice so the writing feels intentional and polished.
Sentences should vary in structure.
Don’t start every paragraph with the same word.
Are there repeated words close together?
Paragraphs shouldn’t look like symmetrical blocks.
Search for crutch words.
Etc.
Final Pass – Proofreading
Do a slow, careful read to catch typos, grammar slips, punctuation mistakes, and formatting issues. This is your chance to fix any distracting errors so readers can stay fully immersed in your work.
[Here you can also (command + F) to search for spelling of names, check capitalization, etc.]
